breast exam Blacksburg VAWomen in their 20’s often don’t consider themselves at risk for breast cancer. Doctors may stress the importance of breast self-exams monthly at your yearly physical, but how many of us really take the time to perform that self-exam? The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin performing a monthly breast exam at age 20.

The Benefits of Breast Self-Exams

  • You know your breasts better than anyone else.
  • Self exams can lead to earlier detection and higher survival rates.
  • You may actually see increased self-esteem by doing regular self-exams.
  • It only takes a few minutes!

How Do I perform the Self-Exam?

  • The best time is a few days after your period ends.
  • Stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your sides to visually inspect your breasts.
  • Follow a pattern so that you examine your entire breast. Start near your armpit and work around in a circular pattern.
  • Use the pads of your fingers and different levels of pressure throughout the exam.

What to Look for:

  • Change in size or shape of your breasts.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, especially any bloody discharge.
  • Skin changes like dimpling.

A Few Cautionary Words of Wisdom:

  • If you do find a lump or some irregularity, discuss it with your doctor before going in for a biopsy or other invasive procedure.
  • Not every case of breast cancer is detectable with a monthly self-exam.
  • If you have an increased risk of breast cancer because of family history, it is even more important to perform your monthly self-exams.
  • If you do not feel you are able to complete an adequate exam on your own, discuss other options with your doctor.
